Handmade Holidays: Velvet Blazer with Spoonflower

Handmade Holidays: Velvet Blazer with Spoonflower

The holiday season is upon us and though things may continue to look different from years past, we’ve found new ways to still gather with friends and family. And even if the fancy holiday parties are put on hold, we can still make special garments perfect for dressing up or down, like a velvet blazer using Spoonflower custom printed fabric.

I love the idea of a velvet jacket or blazer as the focal point of a holiday ensemble, especially since it can be styled so many ways. A velvet blazer goes great with a tee and jeans for casual family get togethers, but it can also be paired with a chic jumpsuit or slinky slip dress for holiday work parties or a night out. Another bonus? In a print that isn’t overtly festive a velvet blazer will get tons of mileage even after the decorations are packed away.

Spoonflower offers two velvet fabrics, both of which are a more user friendly alternative to traditional silk velvet which is prone to damage from pressure or moisture. The Celosia Velvet is a bit more shimmery and comes in at 9.2 oz per square yard, while the Performance Velvet has a matte appearance and is a little heavier at 11.5 oz per square yard. I made my blazer with the Performance Velvet which worked really well for a simple jacket like the Heather Blazer from Friday Pattern Co. It does get a little thick at some points, so if your sewing machine struggles to sew multiple layers of thicker fabrics , I’d choose the Celosia Velvet for your apparel.

When deciding on a design for my piece I was inspired by a REDValentino floral velvet blazer, and searched the Spoonflower marketplace for a floral print that was more my style. I went with a ditzy floral called “Vintage Prairie Chintz Floral Bouquets in Black + Fuchsia” from Yesterday Collection for a more subtle flower print. And to complement the pink and purple flowers, I lined my jacket with “Small Purple Pink Plaid” from Kelly Renay printed on Spoonflower’s Poly Crepe De Chine. Paired with the more casual design of the Heather Blazer, these fabrics came together as a jacket that fits into my wardrobe more than a traditional velvet blazer.

Do you have any holiday sewing plans this year? Are you sewing fancy things or more casual pieces? Let me know in the comments! And may your holidays be brimming with joy and belonging!
