Sierra Tote with Spoonflower Recycled Canvas

Sierra Tote with Spoonflower Recycled Canvas

Hi all!

You might have seen this project on Instagram a couple months ago, and I’m happy to be sharing more details about this newest fabric from Spoonflower: Recycled Canvas!

This post is my honest opinion using fabric I received free of charge from Spoonflower as a Spoonflower Ambassador.

The new Recycled Canvas is a polyester performance fabric made from 50% REPREVE® recycled fibers. Each yard of Recycled Canvas is made from 10 recycled plastic bottles! I really like that REPREVE utilizes materials that are otherwise considered trash, helping to alleviate the strain on our natural resources. The resulting fabric is extremely soft with a bit of a sheen and vibrant printing. I love how beautifully these sprinkles pop on the Recycled Canvas! It also has really great drape but is still durable for projects like indoor/outdoor decor. I used the Recycled Canvas to make a project bag for my budding knitting hobby, but it would also make awesome throw pillows, wall hangings (like Robert Mahar’s new pennant banners!), accessories (think belts, pouches, or dog collars), and upholstery projects.

I was in need of a suitable bag for my new knitting projects, so I used the Recycled Canvas to make a Sierra Tote, a pattern by Indigo Bird Patterns. The canvas worked beautifully for this project, lending the perfect amount of structure for this bin-style bag. The print quality is fantastic and the pink and rainbow sprinkles are an instant dose of cheer any time I look at it.

I also used some of the canvas to make an Origami Pouch, another pattern from Indigo Bird. This free pouch pattern is ideal for storing lots of odds and ends like needles, a pair of snips, stitch markers, embroidery floss, tape measure…it makes a great partner for the Sierra Tote or any other project bag. I wondered how my machine was going to handle sewing through so many layers of the Recycled Canvas, but I’m happy to say that a heavy duty needle went through the layers of canvas beautifully. I’ve had trouble in the past with sewing polyester canvas but these projects went very smoothly, no matter how many layers I was sewing.
